The Box of Skull

In one of the dry washes off the road, they spy a cardboard box.

"You know, I played a lot of text-only adventure games years ago," says Sara.

"The last time I checked, this wasn't an adventure game," says Jasper, a touch peevishly.

"Well..yeah. But the rules of this place seem to act like one, from time to time. Wherever this place is," She momentarily wrestles with a distant memory, and finally gives up. Whatever it was, it will have to come in its own time. "When you come upon a strange object, the appropriate thing to do is to investigate it. It might be something useful that you need later."

Before Jasper can say anything, she dashes off the road to the box and opens it. Jasper trots behind her.

Sara gasps and almost drops it on seeing the contents.

Jasper sees that the box contains...a bleached human skull. He struggles with an ancient instinct to sample it for flavor long enough to pick it up and look it in the face.

1. "Don't touch that!!" Sara screams. "You don't know where it's been!"
2. The skull bites him.
3. "Hey, what's the idea? I was catching a nap!" Morte drops out of Jasper's grasp.
4. Jasper uses the skull as a crude hand-puppet.
5. They put the skull in Sara's backpack and go on. A short distance later, they find a wall blocking the road, made of ears of corn. There's a skull-shaped opening in the wall at eye level.
6. A team of CSI's surrounds the duo.
