Trying to Make Sense of Things

"Whatever caused it, it must have affected New York as well," Stacy said. "I lost my memory, and then found that the city was deserted. But what puzzles me is that I'm convinced that half-animal people aren't supposed to exist. That's why I freaked out when I first saw Joe. So is this a different reality to the one that I come from? If so, then how come it seems to have suffered the same fate as my own? And what's with all these portals?"

"Portals?" Joe asked. So Stacy described her experiences of the last few hours, and then Astra filled Joe in or her own (Astra's) history.

When Joe had taken all that in, she said: "So how come I was left behind here when everyone else vanished? And how come you were left behind in New York, Stacy?"

"If the two of you were left behind, then it's almost certain that more people will have been," Astra said. "It would be good if we could contact at least some of them."

"I live within walking distance, and I have an Internet connection," Joe said. "The Internet is highly automated, so is probably still working. We could try to contact other people through that."

1. Once the concept of the Internet had been explained to Astra, they decided that was what they would do.
2. Just then, someone else entered the store.
3. Yet another portal materialised.
