If he was to have any chance at all, Fred decided, he would have to do the unexpected. And what could be more unexpected than to take the fight to the dragon? So he charged towards it. If he could somehow get onto its back, where it couldn't reach him with its teeth and claws, then he might have some sort of chance. Even then, though, without a weapon he couldn't see how he could do it any harm.

As Fred ran towards the dragon:

  1. It flew into the air and hovered out of reach.
  2. Someone in the crowd threw a sword into the ring!
  3. Astra leapt to her feet and shouted: "No, leave Fred alone! Fight me instead.
  4. From somewhere at the back of the crowd, a ray of purple light appeared, and played on the dragon. The wizard's doing?
