Susan's mother came up to Stacy and said: "It looks as though I owe you an
apology.
I had no idea that amnesia was the reason that you hadn't been in touch.
You know, Susan
was tighter than a clam about what your
experiments were for, and what results were coming out. Said it was all
highly
confidential. Anyway, I hope you get your memory back soon."
Stacy thought that it might be fortunate that the woman hadn't asked herself how Stacy had been able to cope with life in New York if her amnesia had set in very soon after she had arrived there. She was pretty sure that her amnesia must have been a very recent thing, which made her feel very guilty about her past behaviour. Still, it was no use worrying about that now. "How long is Susan going to have to stay in hospital?" she asked. "Well, the doctors still have to do some more tests this afternoon, so we'll have a much better idea tomorrow." Now why on Earth couldn't the nurse have told me that? thought Stacy, exasperated. Susan's mother went on: "I'll be staying with Susan for the rest of the day, of course. I think Melanie will be taking you, Jimmy and Carol back to Socorro soon, but you're welcome to come back tomorrow." Stacy replied:
