"What happened to the wizard?" Fred asked. "So sad. I'm afraid
he got caught by one of my fireballs and perished." Fred wasn't
sure whether to believe this. However, if it was true, then it
seemed
that the only hope they had was if Fred could defeat the dragon in the duel
that had been proposed.
"About this duel," he said. "If I win and kill you, we all go free?" The dragon smiled, displaying its frightening array of teeth to full advantage. "Your winning is a very remote eventuality," it said. "I haven't given my underlings any specific instructions, but I think you could assume that if I were to die they would be so demoralised that they would not oppose you." At that moment Fred heard a distant scream. It sounded as though the princess was already back on the rack. He had no time to lose. "All right," he said hastily. "I agree. Where's my weapon?"
