"Thanks," said Stacy. At that point the nurse came in and said: "Just ten more minutes visiting time, apart from Susan's mother. We don't want to overtire Susan on her first day awake." "I think Melanie and Carol ought to get to see Susan having come all this way," said Susan's mother. "Jimmy, will you and Stacy please leave and ask Melanie and Carol to come in?" So, rather reluctantly, Jimmy and Stacy left the room.

As they went out, Stacy whispered to the nurse: "Could I speak to you for a moment outside, please?" Once they were through the door, she said to the nurse: "I didn't want to ask you this in front of Susan, but how much longer is she likely to be in hospital?"

  1. "Well, it looks like there was no brain damage beyond very severe concussion, so she could be out in a matter of days."
  2. "It could be weeks, even months. And even then she's unlikely to be able to lead a normal life."
  3. "I'm sorry, but it wouldn't be right for me to tell you that. You'll have to ask her mother."
