The wizard raised an eyebrow in surprise. During Jolyon's time as his
apprentice - which admittedly had not been long - the lad had not given
him the impression that he was likely to be a great success with the
ladies, in spite of his occasional talk about a girlfriend. Walwyn had
formed the impression that the girl might be a figment of Jolyon's
imagination, intended to give the boy some credibility with his peers.
Yet here was Natasha in the flesh, absolutely stunning and - even more
surprising - apparently about four years older than Jolyon. Her brother
was a handsome young man. From his attire, and the sword at his side, it
seemed likely that he was a soldier. Perhaps an officer, as his gear
seemed of good quality. Gilana was not as immediately eye-catching as her
friend, but she too was very pretty in a more understated way. The
sixth sense that the best wizards possessed told him that she was a magic
user, though not a very powerful one.
"I'm pleased to meet you all," he said. "Have you eaten yet? If not, perhaps we could all go to The Green Dragon for a late lunch." Soon they were all settled round a table in the inn, with plates of bread and cheese and pints of ale in front of them. "So," Walwyn said, "won't you tell me a little about yourselves? Perhaps Natasha would like to go first?"
