Stacy's mouth dropped open. How had Susan known about her amnesia?
"What do you mean?" she asked. "Well, it was pretty clear when you left
that you intended to experiment on yourself. After all, the facilities
in Socorro were fine for experimenting on animals, but you'd want
something a lot better if you were going to risk trying your anti-aging
drug
on yourself. And where better than New York, once you'd won all that
money and could afford the best?
"At first I couldn't understand why you never got in touch, but later on when the rats developed amnesia it all fell into place. I never mentioned the rats' amnesia to Mom or Jimmy - somehow it felt like it would have been breaching a confidence. Sorry, Mom. Oh, and you've got to see an oculist right away." With Susan having guessed so much, though Stacy couldn't be absolutely certain it was correct (and felt that her amnesia was probably more recent than Susan had assumed)...
