On their previous visit, the frost giantesses had been teleported in and
out. Nightfall had come this way once before, as a human, but retained no
useful memory of it. Thus to find the dragoness's lair the party were
reliant on the map that the mage had provided. How he had come by it they
had not asked. They just hoped that it was accurate and complete, for the
cavern system was extensive and complex.
Some of the passages that they had been intending to take proved to be too small for Gilda and Hilda, and the party had to find alternative routes. Obviously the dragoness was larger still, and she must have at least one way of accessing her lair. That would no doubt have involved flying, and Gilda and Hilda had discussed the possibility of resuming their gryphoness forms. However the problem with that was that the explorers who had made their map had naturally been ignorant of routes that would require flying. And they knew that the entrances from the outside world that the dragoness used were sure to be well hidden, so that even an aerial survey would probably not have found them. So they had to do it the hard way, hoping that it would be possible to reach their destination. It would be too frustrating if it proved impossible to find a useable route.
