Fred and Astra found themselves back in the luxuriously appointed
bedroom. However it had changed again in several respects. The wardrobe
had vanished, presumably because Manathus did not want them to make a
further visit through it to the catacombs on their own initiative. Off
the bedroom, there was now a dining room, with a table laden with a
substantial cold buffet. Evidently the mage had remembered that it was a
long time since they had last eaten. There was also a bathroom. No doubt
Manathus could have kept them clean magically, but he had correctly
decided that they might find that unsettling.
So Astra bathed first, taking the opportunity to examine the substantial bruises on her breasts, and when she had finished Fred had his turn. Then they both tucked into the buffet. "At least we have a suite now rather than just a bedroom," Fred observed. "Yes, but it's one with no way out of it. Still, I suppose that's of academic interest for the time being, as after I've eaten I'm going straight to bed. It's been a very long day, and I'm whacked. And it's been a very long time since I've had the luxury of sleeping in a bed. so I intend to tale full advantage of it." "I'm very tired too. But I wondered if you would like me to sleep in a chair, rather than sharing the four-poster? After all, whatever Manathus's intention that we should marry - and when we aren't so tired we must discuss how we feel about that - we aren't as yet man and wife." "Don't be silly, Fred. I know you well enough by now to know that you wouldn't dream of doing anything improper. You need a good night's sleep as much as I do. Of course you must share the bed. It's big enough that we shan't be uncomfortably close." So after eating, they both went to sleep in the bed. In the morning, they woke up:
