Evidently Exotica's magic, though powerful, couldn't manage time travel.
Fred found himself in the courtyard of his family's ancestral castle,
which the passage of 1500 years had reduced to a ruin. But enough of the
structure still stood for him to recognise where he was and to work out
what must have happened.
The archeological team was just packing up for the day, as it was well on in the evening and, although it was mid-summer, the light was beginning to go. A middle-aged man had been supervising the digging of a trench across the courtyard, which had lost its original paving many hundreds of years before. He spotted Fred out of the corner of his eye, not realising that he had materialised out of thin air, and turned towards him. "I'm impressed by how you're dressed," he said. "A knight from the period of this castle would be attired very much like that. You must have put a lot of work into it." "Er, thank you. I'm afraid that I'm lost. I don't suppose that you could tell me where I could find the home of a teenaged boy called Andrew D'Honaire?" The man was naturally puzzled. Surely, dressed as he was, the new arrival must have come here deliberately? So how could he be lost? But he saw no reason not to be helpful. "What's the address?" "I don't know." Odder and odder.
