Fortunately Astra, though not as familiar with the code as Fred was, managed to understand the gist of the message. She lay in wait round the corner of the intersection, intent on freeing the human, who with any luck would be a useful ally. Before long she heard the footsteps of the three beings approaching.

Stepping forward into view, in quick succession she fired at first one alien and then at the other.

1. With the advantage of surprise, she killed both. The human's reaction was not what she had been expecting, though. "Oh dear, what have you done?" von Strutters said.
2. She hit the first alien, but the second had enough warning to dive out of the way of her shot, at the same time drawing its own weapon and firing at her in return.
