Astra replies "Of course! They are a genetically advanced breed, and are
domesticated. Never seen one with a gnoll before, though. In any case, we
should keep walking towards town. If they attack, we could be in serious
trouble. They have a neurotoxic poison that will disable us within seconds
if we are even scratched by those fangs." Fred is only too happy to nod his agreement, and they resume walking towards the town. Unfortunately, the Ge'horen* and its gnoll companion are beginning to angle towards the road. Velus can barely be seen in the distance. "Get ready" says Fred, "we are about to have company." Astra hands Fred back his sword [55] "I can fight hand-to-hand quite well, but you will need this." They pick up the pace, but so does the Gehoren, finally, when it is but a mere five feet from the road, Fred and Astra turn to the left and take up fighting stances. The hideous creature pulls up short, about a foot from the Xathiya**, and hesitates. The gnoll, who is hanging further back, yells out a gutteral comand, and the huge spider springs forward towards Fred and Astra, letting loose a hideous gurgling hiss. Fred brings his arm back to swing his mighty sword, but as the Gehoren crosses the plane of the Xathiya there is a loud crackling sound and purplish blue lightning shoots from the orb at the top of the nearest obelisk and fries it in midair, flinging it back towards its gnoll companion. What is left is a charred, smoldering husk. The gnoll itself nods and shakes its head, says something in a language none of them recognize, and runs away into the shadows. Yes, the shadows, because it is getting darker by the minute. The orbs at the top of the obelisks are now visibly glowing a dim purple. Fred and Astra are still incredulously staring at the smoldering remains of the massive beast. "It would appear" says Astra "that these obelisks protect the path for travelers." "So it would seem," Fred has resumed walking again "but I would much prefer not to be out here when it goes from gray to night." "Agreed" says Astra, and they hoof it double-time towards the city lights. * - Gehoren are huge spiders, about three to four feet in height. Their fangs are highly poisonous. They are domesticated, and the product of magical genetic engineering. ** - Xathiya are mysterious black obelisks lining the path. They are topped with floating dark smooth orbs.
