Like a tableau frozen in time the scene before Paulito's startled eyes
burned itself into his consciousness.
A strikingly beautiful redheaded woman stood in the empty game room
pointing at a monstrous seven
foot tall floppy eared rabbit-monster. On the floor at the monster's feet
lay a dead knight, a knight
wearing the armor and insignia of the Great Kingdom. Three more men stood
in a rough circle around
the beast, just out of reach of its sharp claws. Two he had never seen
before, but the third man he
recognized instantly. It was Sir Josh, knight of Allaria, protector of the
Great Kingdom, and one of
Paulito's semi-regular drinking buddies. As to who and why and what, that
would have to wait. It was
clear that the three men were quickly going to die at the rabbit-monster's
hands if something wasn't done.
Like a master dancer Paulito suddenly dipped the beautiful girl in his arms
and kissed her deeply. She
gaped at him but her eyes sparkled. "Thanks for the sugar, honey. But
when I come back I expect a
piece of amerkan pie," he winked and then pulled her back to her feet.
Without another word he rushed
forward toward the pointy toothed bunny from hell.
He screamed out his warrior cry, "YIPPEE KAI YAY FUDDER SMUCKER!!!" and leapt at the startled lepus before it knew what was happening. Paulito's sword flew like a hummingbird's wings and the blur of his striking form was suddenly obscured by a cloud of blood and gore. The red headed woman fainted. The previously endangered threesome backed away. But Paulito just kept cutting the monster-rabbit up until the only thing left was its lucky left foot. And then with a gasp for air he wiped his brow and sheathed his sword. The fight had been quick and to the point, and Paulito knew he had been damn lucky. The mutant bunny had been so focused in on its intended victims that it never had a chance against his surprise attack. If things had been otherwise, well who knew what would have happened. He then turned toward the three men whose lives he had just saved and found them standing like statues, their eyes vacant and their skin white. Something was obviously very wrong with them.
