Paulito had enough cash not to worry about it. The first thing he wanted
to do was take a room and
wash the dirt off his bones. His trek to the city had been long and
tiring. After that he intended to check
out the card tables. He needed to see who his competition was and build up
his reputation. He had no
doubt that his skill at cards would see him through to the more important
games and the more important
players. All it would take was some time. After walking about the city
for a while, Paulito decided to
make his stay at the Gold Doubloon Saloon. It wasn't the most impressive
gambling hall in Vegas, but it
had an above average reputation and it would do as a start.
When he walked through the arched doorway into the casino Paulito was anything but disappointed. The Gold Doubloon was bustling with people and filled with the sounds of money being won and lost. Beautiful women strolled through the large main room, hostesses they were called and they were ready at a moments notice to help a lucky winner celebrate his good fortune. A big band played on a stage in one corner and jugglers plied their trade on another. This was where the tourists came, to play craps or blackjack or place a bet on the roulette wheel. Most of them would leave the room without a penny in their pockets. But none would complain. The place was too much fun and the drinks never ran dry. Platter girls were constantly on the move in that room, keeping the flow of alcohol from ever stopping; over-sized pitchers of ale and beer filling up the wooden boards they carried with them from table to table. Paulito stepped up to the front desk and asked for a room. He threw down a few coins and the man gave him a key. He nodded, turned around and found himself face to face with a sultry blonde beauty. "Hi there, stranger," she smiled. Paulito instantly recognized that she was one of the casino's hostesses. "Hi right back atcha," he said. "My name's Cathy and guess what," she said with a wink, "I've taken it upon myself to make sure you have a good time during your stay. Sound like a good idea?" Paulito reached out with one hand and grabbed her by the waist. He pulled her in close and whispered, "Baby, that's the best idea I've heard all day." She smiled warmly. This guy had charm and he didn't smell like horse manure. Those were two very big plusses in her book. The two of them turned round and headed toward the staircase leading to the upper floors, but then a cry and a shout erupted from the room behind them. The gamblers began to stampede and Paulito and his hostess were nearly knocked over by the onrush of frightened patrons. What the hell was going on?!
