The road to Colonia Gallia was wide enough for two riders to travel abreast comfortably. Fred thought that there was one order that was best, where conversation would pass pleasantly but the party would be prepared in case of trouble. The company should be arranged in three rows of two people. Lucius and he would lead. If there were an attack of some sort, he was, he thought, the strongest man-of-arms in the group. Besides that, he wanted to take the measure of Lucius, and he seemed to understand Fred's language well enough. Jan and Brennus would be the rear guard. Fred reckoned Brennus as the second strongest in the group, and Jan as not being far behind. Jan was also a native Barque speaker, and could speak easily with Brennus. Sartoma and Checkers were best for the middle row. Fred was concerned that Checkers' health might take a turn for worse, although she seemed to have enough sense to ask for a delay if she felt too sick to continue. And Sartoma, although a skilled mage, hardly fit the part of a warrior. And Sartoma had been through a tough time as well, both with Charlie and at the gaming table.
