The Contents of the Black Boxes

As Diana followed Fred along the passage, she had been wishing that they
could leave Exotica behind. Judging by recent events, it seemed that
having the Allarian princess with them put them at even greater risk of
coming to a sticky end. But she knew better than to say anything to Fred.
As a knight, he was sworn to protect all women. (Though some of us
need far less protection than others, she thought wryly.) And as an
Allarian knight, that duty would be even stronger in the case of
female members of the Allarian royal family.
Her train of thought was interrupted by their arrival in a small chamber that contained a large number of strange black boxes about a foot across. What was strange about them was that each one was in the shape of a regular dodecahedron. At least, they were perfectly regular in their shape except for a knob on one face. It seemed that that face must be a lid that could be opened using the knob. An opening high up in one wall of the chamber admitted enough light for them to see all this. Diana saw Fred slump down onto the floor of the chamber with a heavy sigh. He was clearly getting weaker. Exotica was still out of it. Her eyes were open, but when Sofia and Imelda propped her against a wall she remained there unmoving. Sofia picked up one of the boxes and, before Diana could say "Hey, that might be dangerous", had pulled on the knob and opened the lid. From inside she pulled out a carefully folded object which, when unfurled, proved to be a white robe which, in spite of what must be its great antiquity, seemed in perfect condition. "Clothes!" she said delightedly. Imelda opened another box. "This one's contents are the same," she said. "I guess that they all are." "They must be vestments for the priests or priestesses," Diana said. "This must have been their changing room. I wouldn't advise putting them on. They might bear enchantments against being worn by anyone not authorised." But Sofia and Imelda were too delighted by their discovery to be deterred. They both donned a robe.
