The Science of Selling Yourself Short

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 72665

It was a group of four Baldwin football players, all fairly big dudes, pounding the daylights out of little Davey Willis. Davey was a very timid outcast at Montcalm, plagued by crippling shyness. He was also the one social misfit that nobody at school dared pick on, dating back from an incident in the first grade where a group of kids plotted to "get Davey Willis" during recess one afternoon. It was an incredible sight to see a group of fifteen kids stop in their tracks after Davey turned around, showing them the most horrified look possible. Three of the would-be attackers were so unnerved that they all burst into tears on the spot. From that day forward, no one picked on Davey Willis. Any newcomers to the school who tried to tease Davey in the ensuing years found out the hard way that he was essentially untouchable.

Davey Willis attended every single Montcalm game, quietly cheering his team onto victory. He had tried to quickly escape the riot when he was grabbed by the four Baldwin football players. Two of them held Davey's arms while the other two jerks took turns punching him in the face and chest. Scott was horrified to see Davey, with his shirt torn, his nose bloodied, his glasses broken on the floor trying to tell his attackers to stop. Finally, they just threw him to the floor like so much garbage before being attacked by a bigger group of Montcalm athletes for having the audacity to assault poor Davey.

Scott had finally had enough. He made his way to the locker room, determined to get out of that madhouse one way or another. He also no longer cared how many people he pushed out of his way to get out of that brawl. Upon making it to the relative peace and quiet of his own locker room, Scott hastily opened his locker, grabbed everything he could hold, and raced out of the emergency exit. All he wanted to do was run home. He ignored the handful of people who were hiding in there when they kept asking him what was going on.

As Scott walked quickly away from the building, he tried hard to not notice the dozens of people who had finally made their way out of the building. Some were dazed, others had been injured in the riot. A few more were overwhelmed with excitement.

By now, the authorities had arrived, followed by several television news trucks. Traffic on the main road outside of Montcalm had slowed to a standstill, as emergency vehicles tied up all four lanes. Scott was on the brink of tears. Why did this have to happen? It's a stupid game, and people care so much about a stupid rivalry that they're willing to riot and cause extensive property damage to stick it to the other school? His mind kept flashing back to Davey Willis getting the shit pounded out of him for no reason. What the hell did he ever do to those idiots in the first place?

Finally, Scott made it back home, having run the mile and a half in what seemed like just mere moments. The sirens from the police cars and fire engines still echoed very loudly as Scott opened his front door. Nobody was home, and Scott deduced his parents were still stuck in traffic, trying to get home. Upon reaching his bedroom, Scott dropped everything he was carrying, and slumped down by the foot of his bed. He could feel the events of tonight scarring his memories as the tears finally fell. All of this over just basketball?

  1. Scott's thirteen year breakdown continues...
