Soon, after what seemed like forever, the third period began. Montcalm
won the tip off. Just after center Tom Franck got the ball, and made a
bold drive towards his backet, Baldwin's cocky forward Matt Dickens
clobbered him. There was no question that Dickens hit Franck with a cheap
shot. Tom went down hard, as the sound of his head hitting the wood
echoed through the gymnasium. A collective gasp was heard in the crowd.
Montcalm coach Mick Hollinger went ballistic on his bench. "HEY REF, WHAT
THE HELL WAS THAT?!" he screamed. Baldwin coach Terry Stephens shook his
head in disbelief as he witnessed Dickens threatening Franck. Matt Dickens was a decent player, sure, but his attitude on the court definitely left quite a bit to be desired, as he was notorious for pushing opposing players out of bounds, or "accidentally" tripping them. He was not well liked at Montcalm, and had a couple of run-ins with Montcalm students at parties. And there he was, standing over Franck, gesturing wildly with his arms and screaming "You want some of this, punk? You want some? You don't talk shit about me, bitch!!" The Montcalm fans began to boo heartily. That's when Montcalm's resident hothead Paul Novak decided to handle the situation himself. "I knew that Dickens was always so full of himself," he would later say about what ensued next. "When I saw him cheapshot Tommy like that, all I could think about was how fitting it would be to just humiliate the dude in front of his own team. The idea of the consequences of what I did were a million miles away. It just seemed completely unimportant at the time how much trouble we all would get into. All I wanted to do was make Dickens cry in front of all of his friends!" Novak ran at Dickens, tackling him onto the court, and they began punching each other. Both teams quickly jumped into the melee, except for Scott. A quick acting news photographer managed to shoot an unbelievable picture of a big pile of player practically falling onto Novak and Dickens...with a bewildered Scott Childers looking on just a few feet away. No one had any idea that this picture would be in every newspaper in the country within a matter of days.
