Karen stared wildly at the floating tennis ball (or whatever it was) as the
narrative shifted perceptibly back to past tense.
"BALL!" she screamed with nothing like the enthusiasm shown by the dogs in a web comic Mark was following. A mighty punch sent the innocent ball ricocheting between the shelves, and Mark had to duck three times before he managed to catch it and hide it in his pocket. He should have seen that coming. Karen had an abnormal fear of small balls (which also made her a closet lesbian, but that is another story and shall be told another time). Her parents were tennis enthusiasts, and it was the game that had brought them together. So naturally they had started taking their firstborn to all their games, hoping that their enthusiasm would rub off on her. What did happen was that she kept getting hit by the ball in the face, over and over again. No wonder she hated and feared them with or without a vengeance.
