During the many hours of listening to Robert's tedious boasting when they
had been stuck on the raft, when there had been no way of escaping it,
the subject of Astra's and Alex(is)'s misfortunes at the hands of Zerm
the Unspeakable had come up. "Hah, you should have had me with you,"
Robert had jeered. "When I came up against Zerm, I not only escaped
unscathed but also stole a jewel-encrusted goblet that was worth a king's
ransom. The best of it is, he doesn't know that it was me who stole it.
Otherwise he would no doubt have done something unpleasant to me."
Of course, this might just have been another of Robert's wild fantasies, but if it should happen to be true then Zerm would want revenge against Robert. In the bottom of the boat that she and Alexis had escaped from Zerm in, [10065] she had found a note shortly after they had cast off. "So sorry that this boat won't take you ladies where you would like to go. If you want Alexis turned back into Alex, then I'll do so if Astra will agree to join her great-aunt Helena as one of my exhibits and slaves. To contact me, just say my name five times in rapid succesion, which will establish a telepathic connection." Astra had never told Alexis about this offer, but had thrown the note overboard without her "sister" being made aware of its existence. Even for Alexis to be restored as Alex, she hadn't been prepared to pay so heavy a price, and telling her about it would only have led to unpleasantness. Now, however, Astra wanted to talk to Zerm. Not to volunteer to be his slave, but to snitch on Robert. Perhaps Zerm would be grateful enough for the information to transform Alexis back to Alex. Even if not, at least he would no doubt ensure that Robert suffered heavy punishment. And as far as Astra was concerned, no punishment could be too severe.
