As the sorceress bent down, Fred saw Astra's limp, bound body come
closer. For he could see through the walls of his prison, though
everything appeared distorted and had a ruby hue. He could neither hear
nor be heard however.
Or rather he could only hear the voice of the sorceress in his head. You have done well, but that will be enough, she said. You may leave her to me now. Fred realised that she was not talking to him, and that was confirmed when the ropes binding Astra unknotted themselves and flowed back onto the shelf where she had originally found them. Meanwhile the gag left her mouth. Astra's alarmingly purple complexion began to fade. Now that the ropes had gone, Fred could see that her throat was a mass of bruises and her wrists and ankles were bleeding. There were bruises on her forehead too. But he saw her mouth open and her chest heave as she gulped in great quantities of air, reassuring him that she was at least still alive. Her eyes opened.
