Gilda's Idea

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 70929

In the end, our beautiful elfin woman says: "Rescuing my cubs comes before all else. If, in order to accomplish that, I need to pretend to believe in some god or goddess, then I am willing to do so. But I cannot make myself truly believe - belief doesn't work like that. And surely any cleric worth his or her salt - and that is the only sort worth bothering with - would detect my pretence? Or at least be suspicious about a wood elf claiming to follow a human god. Couldn't you two act on my behalf in this, and wouldn't the cleric be satisfied if the two of you genuinely believed?"

Hilda shrugs. "I don't know and I don't suppose that Gilda does either. You are certain to recall much more about the ways of human clerics than we do, and if you don't know then we are unlikely to. And in any case, we would have the same problem as you. We can't even recall what gods or goddesses we worshipped as humans, so feigning belief would be difficult. I think that we may have to go to a mage then. Unless... Don't wood elves have shamans? Mightn't one of those help us?"

"No, that won't work. The shaman would call on the Mistress of the wood elves, our goddess. And She and I are not on the best of terms right now. I'd be more likely to pick up a curse than any help if I tried that." [69858]

"So it looks as though we must try a mage," Gilda says. "I've had an idea in connection with that. It's risky, but it may be worth it. We could go back to the mage's house where we acquired Braveheart. There may well be valuable magical artifacts that we could loot that another mage would be happy to take in payment. Perhaps Braveheart might be able to help us avoid any booby traps? Of course, we'd have rather to guess which things looked like they might be the most valuable."

  1. They decide to try this.
  2. They decide against this.
