It made Fred feel sick, watching the great unwashed scoop pile after pile
of priceless gems and coins into their filthy, pocked hands. He was a
hero, for Lord's sake! He had faced down a Dragon, a Dragon! And now some
two-bit eye-of-newt loonball was granting untold riches to the kind of
people who would consider successfully squeezing a boil on the small of
their back a life-changing achievement. Filled with fury at the injustice
of the world, Fred had packed up his things and left his government-
sanctioned retirement bungalow to set off into the unknown world. It was
at this point he fell down the Hole.
For what felt like hours, Fred fell. He fell first past soil, clay and the odd skeletal body part, and as he descended, the soil gave way to mud, the mud to rock, the rock to......some more rock, only darker and more menacing looking (at least to Fred it looked more menacing, although being as he was travelling downwards at terminal velocity, he couldn't be one hundred percent sure). And still he fell, and all light was left behind, as Fred fell into utter darkness. He closed his eyes pointlessly, and hoped that his death was swift and painless. Then, as suddenly as suddenly can be, Fred's fall was broken by...
