Jimmy pointed to a thick and rather disorderly-looking lab notebook lying
on a table. Stacy's heart gave a little leap at the sight of it. Could
she have found her answers at last? She tried to keep her voice casual.
"Oh, good. Say, Jimmy, I'd be very interested to look over Susan's notes.
Do you think I could borrow the notebook?" "Well," said Jimmy doubtfully, "she's real funny about letting people see her notebook. But since it's you... Sure. Why not?" "Thank you!" Stacy exclaimed with rather more enthusiasm than she meant to show. She picked the notebook up gingerly. "I'll just take it with me, then, and I can bring it back tomorrow when I'm done." Jimmy agreed to this, and Stacy spent several more impatient minutes making sympathetic small talk with him before she felt it polite to leave. The walk back to her hotel was a fairly short one -- nearly every place being within walking distance in Socorro -- but she spent it in an agony of curiosity. She was so preoccupied with the possible contents of the notebook that she didn't even realize until she found herself back at the hotel that she'd found her way across town with no trouble. Well, that was encouraging, surely? Between that and the way she'd remembered her ATM number, the indications seemed to be that her memories were not gone entirely, merely not consciously accessible. With that encouraging thought in mind, she sprawled herself across her hotel bed and began to read...
