The second man was out of it for the moment, writhing in pain on the
floor, having
received a kick where
it hurts the most. Stacy didn't know if the first man would really shoot
her or not,
but she wasn't prepared to take the chance. She stopped. "Good," said Man
Number One.
"If you're going to be sensible, that makes life much easier. It's lucky
for you
that I won, you know, since we are the only ones who know how to restore
your
memory."
He retrieved the papers where Man Number Two had dropped them on the floor. "Now, it's possible that our friend here has a companion sitting outside in the car that he mentioned, so we must be careful. Basically, it means I stay right behind you as we exit onto the street, since you'll provide me with cover and he'll be reluctant to shoot you." I hope! thought Stacy. There was a driver sitting in the white sedan, who looked disconcerted when he saw Stacy emerge followed not by his colleague but by Man Number One. Perhaps he did not have a gun. At any rate, he made no move to intervene. Man Number One walked so close to Stacy, that no passers by noticed that he had a gun pressed in her back. "Don't forget," he whispered in her ear, "if you want your memory back, you'll co-operate. I'm putting the gun away now, but I can get it out within two seconds if need be." Stacy assumed that they would be getting in a car, but the man surprised her by directing her into the subway station just up the street. "Yes, I had a car parked right next to the white sedan," he told her, "but to use that would have been to risk being followed. Using the subway makes that much harder and less likely."
