Stacy had reflected as she collected her car that renting from an auto
dealership might have worked
to her advantage. Once she had placed on the counter a couple of hundred
dollars in cash,
they had not seemed bothered about seeing any identification and/or her
driver's licence [6431].
Apparently they were willing to take on trust that she had a valid licence
and that she was
not about to steal the car. She suspected that she might not have managed
so well
at a proper rental agency.
As soon as she had sat in the driver's seat, she had felt comfortable and known that she could drive, which had come as a relief. Now she was cruising along Highway 60, wondering whether she would have been better off going to White Sands instead. What did the letters C-A-L-A-M signify? The word "calamari" came into her mind for some reason. But wasn't that a type of squid? Lost in her thoughts, she hadn't realised that her speed had drifted upwards, until the sound of a police siren brought her attention back to her driving. She looked at the speedo just before she stepped on the brake: 70 mph. Damn! It was a straight and almost empty stretch of road, but she doubted that the cop would see that as a valid excuse. If he asked to see her licence, she was in big trouble.
