The dragon had caused great destruction, and had killed and captured many
people. Though news was hard to come by in this out of the way location,
Susan assumed that it must still be doing so. The King had charged her
(though she had then been a "him") with putting an end to it, and she had
to do so.
Ignoring Charlie's protests, she packed the supplies that she would need, and borrowed an old sword from a friendly neighbour (who had been left it by his father, who had been a soldier). Then, after saying farewell, she set off on the path that would eventually take her back to the dragon's caves.
