"That's right," Astra replied. "You're evidently not as dumb as you look. As a mercenary, I will do almost anything legal if the price is right, but taking on the dragon is one of the rare exceptions."

She turned back to the local merchant. "My rate for being an escort is 200 gold pieces a day."

"That's a pittance compared to what I would have paid you," Fred protested.

"No amount of money is any use if you aren't alive to spend it." Astra turned back to the merchant once more. "I'm sorry for the interruptions, sir. Is my price acceptable to you?"

  1. The merchant said that it was.
  2. The merchant said that he couldn't afford that much.
  3. Fred interrupts again, with a further inducement for Astra to join him.
