Stacy froze, vase in one hand and papers in the other. "I didn't expect to
find you
here," said the man. "The amnesia-inducing drug we slipped you was
supposed to prevent you finding
your way home or to your office for long enough to give us plenty of time
to search
both locations for the papers, but I see we underestimated your
resourcefulness. Lucky
I brought the gun just in case. And it seems to have worked out rather
conveniently,
since the papers in your hand are what I am after, unless I'm much
mistaken.
"Now, drop the vase." Stacy did as she was told. The carpet was thick enough that it did not break. Now that he could do so without risk, the man reached across and took the papers from her other hand, keeping the gun trained on her the whole time. "Are you from Professor Smith?" asked Stacy, realising even as she asked that that did not make sense, as Professor Smith had clearly not known that she had amnesia. "No. The US military are not the only people to have got wind of your discovery. You really should have been more careful about which of your colleagues you confided in. I can't tell you who I'm working for, of course. Let's just say it's a foreign power." "What are you going to do with me? Kill me?"
