Fred heard a voice inside his head.
Of course that had been a pretty regular occurence ever since
the nurse dropped him on his head when he was two, but this was different.
This voice was male, and it did not say things that made Fred
want to touch himself. Somehow the voice also made him float in the air. Apparently the owner of the voice did not know the difference between telepathic and telekinetic. "Fred," said the voice, "you have been blessed with great power." Fred scratched his head, shooting sparks from his fingertips. "Blessed?" he asked with a shudder. "You mean like what the priest they sent away did to the altarboys?" "No, no! You have been given a great gift." "By the lightning? How did that work anyway?" "Actually the lightning just unlocked a power that has always dwelt inside you. You, Sir Fred, are a mutant." "A mute ant? I never heard ants make a sound at all, so aren't they all mute?" "Never mind that. You have a great power, and I have come here - or rather projected my voice into your mind - to invite you to join a group of su... err, of great heroes." Fred recalled some of the illustrated tales he had read in his youth. "So you want me to join the X-Men?" "Not quite. This is a Christian group and my name is Avian." "Is that why I'm flying?" "No, that is Moocow's fault." "Okay then. So your group is the A-Men?" "Amen." Fred groaned. "Any alternatives?" "Well, since you have a weather based power you could join a group of elementals based on Santa's reindeer. You would be the new Blitzen."
