"Clothes." "It was human, then?" Astra asked. "Maybe," replied Carola,
still trembling from her encounter, "or perhaps it was a demon. Still,
though it was dressed in clothing like a human, it had the resemblance of
some terrible beast."
"Yes, some demon, or demon-human hybrid," Astra mused. "We should be
going before it returns, but stay on your guard as best you can, sister.
This place poses some very unusual dangers, I suspect!"
"This place is getting to me," Carola whispered. "I prefer the caverns
to this. I wish Qundarian would bring us back."
"He insisted that there was something to this place for us," Astra
said. "But what...that is another story. If I had but a torch to light the
way. The old man gave me no warning that we would be wandering in the dark
without any idea of direction or cause!"
"I, too, am beginning to think-" Carola began, then halted. "What is
that?" she exclaimed. "Can you hear it?" Astra could hear nothing, at
first, but then she could begin to make it out as the volume increased.
