The Land of the Dead

"That red glow looks no closer," Carola said. "It must be a very long way off. What do you think it is?"

"I've had an uncomfortable idea about that. Do you recall the old legends about the Land of the Dead?"

"Yes. Where people are supposed to go in the afterlife if they have been evil. Where it's eternally night, with the only light provided by a gigantic crater full of molten lava at its centre. I see what you mean, Astra. I don't like this. What does Qundarian expect us to get for him from the Land of the Dead, and how does he propose to bring us back to the land of the living?"

1. "I think I know what he wants."
2. "I've no idea."
3. It can be dangerous to stay too long in one spot in the Land of the Dead. Instead of replying, Astra said: "Ouch!" It felt as though she had been bitten by a large mosquito, though when she slapped the place there was nothing there.
4. They had tarried too long in one spot. Before Astra could reply, Carola said: "Hey!" Something was tugging at the hem of her gown. She flailed with her arm, but encountered nothing. Then there was a rip as some material was torn away.
