Consumed By Darkness

Fred slashes wildly at the evil shadow creatures, but it seemed to be of no use; his sword just goes through them.

"How do you kill that which is already dead, Fred?" A harsh, whispering voice said, echoing about the place.

"Is that a trick question? Because I've killed zombies before, and all you really have to do is set them on fire!" Fred replied, in an oddly calm voice for the situation. He continued to slash at them, knowing it was no use. It was hard to see them anyway; all he could see was slightly different shade of black against black, he had to listen to the slight movements they made. He deduced there was about six creatures.

"Shut up and die, Fred." Said another voice, this one more feminine.

"Aren't I dead already?" He asked.

"No, Fred." Said the first voice (the harsh, whispery one) again. "By all means, you should be dead, like us..."

"So when you die you become a black shadowy thing?" He asked, still blindly slashing, even though the shadows were now staying still.

"No. You cease to be. There are seven of us; seven people more special then the rest, who have made deals with... hellish creatures, so we could live together. It is a pointless, meaningless existence, but we cannot... we- we don't want to simply cease to exist." Said a third, depressed voice.

"So why aren't I dead? I thought the killer bees stung me to death!" Fred was trying to take this all in.

"Because you're even more special than us. It isn't your time to die- or else, that's what The First thinks." This fourth voice sounded very strong and loud.

"Stop it, The Fifth. We can't reveal too much." Said the female voice.

"Silence!" Said the harshest, whispery voice. "Since the The First is not here, it is my job to decide what to do... Fred; the fates have been mucked with. We do not think you were supposed to die. I will kill you- If you still are here, we will know that there is no mistake. If you do... Goodbye."

"Step into the light, Fred!" Cackled a maniacally evil fifth voice. One of the shadows was moving towards him... it was inside him! He felt the most pain he had ever felt, emptiness... suffering. It was if every organ inside his body was exploding at the same time, and his mind was throbbing.

1. But in a second, it was over. The whispery voice spoke happily, "You are the one!" He exclaimed. "We will take you to meet the First!"
2. Fred awoke, in the middle of the dragon's cave. "Huh. That was weird."
3. And then, there was nothing.
