Just as it seemed that Fred and Astra were about to be finally defeated,
a commanding voice rang out: "Do not kill the infidels! I want them taken
alive.
And you two: lay down your arms!" Such was the commanding nature of the
voice, that
Fred and Astra found themselves doing as they had been ordered. They
looked at the
source of the voice. It looked like an ordinary monkey that a street
musician might
have as his assistant, except for the fine robes that it wore and the
burning intelligence
in its eyes. It was perched on the shoulder of a man who had just ridden
up on a horse; judging by the man's
clothes he was a senior courtier. Several more men, presumably the
Monkey's bodyguards, walked
alongside.
"See that their wounds are tended to and then put them in the visitors' suite. But mount a strong guard outside it; they are not to escape." The bodyguards escorted Fred and Astra to the Monkey's palace, saw to their wounds - which fortunately proved to be nothing worse than minor cuts and grazes - and then showed them to the visitors' suite: lounge, bathroom and two bedrooms. The windows all had bars, and the only door was locked from the outside as well as having a guard outside it. As Fred and Astra ate the meal that had been brought in on a tray, they speculated on the near-hypnotic quality of the Monkey's voice, on how a monkey could be intelligent and be able to speak (not only the local language but their own as well), and on why it had wanted them taken alive. "I fear that it was not out of any concern for our welfare," said Fred. "It must think that there is something that we can do for it." "I'm sure you are right," Astra responded.
