The Frost Giants' employer had hoped that, as well as providing the muscle
with which to threaten the magic user, they might be more resistant to
magical counters than humans would have been. Unfortunately it hasn't
worked out like that, the sleep spell that the magic user cast proving
instantly effective.
Naturally the smuggler has kept well away from the magic user himself. He has arranged to meet the Frost Giants later at an agreed rendezvous, assuming that they have been successful. When they don't show, he will realise that they have failed. He won't get what he wanted, but at least he won't need to pay them. Returning to the waking Frost Giants and their just acquired magical collars... Gilda and Hilda react in the same way to the sensation of a collar round the neck. Each girl brings her hands up to her collar in the hope of unfastening it or, failing that, tearing it off. But then they hurriedly remove their hands, for it feels as though the collar is burning hot. Only to their hands, oddly enough, not to their necks. But magic can achieve effects like that. "Don't try to tamper with your collars," a deep voice says. Turning their heads, they see a man with a greying beard aged about fifty. He goes on: "You will wear those collars for as long as I choose...
