Any Messages?

Going back into the lounge, she checked whether there were any messages on her phone's answering-machine. There was her own call, of course, but there was also a more recent call than that, which must have been made whilst she had been walking from the doughnut shop. She wondered whether it might be from the mysterious professor. Though the call would not have been answered, he might have thought that she was refusing to talk to him, rather than being out, and have sent round his enforcers.

She played back the call. It began...

1. "You can run but you can't hide, Doctor Jones."
2. "Hi, sis. I'm about to board the train at Newark. Expect me to be with you at about eight."
3. "The rent is overdue again. If you don't pay up at once, you'll be out on the street tomorrow."
4. In fact it didn't begin. A wrong number? Or had somebody wanted to see if she was in?
