Fred thought that, by any other than Aqualarian standards, with the
exception of Imelda the women had shown a considerable degree of stoicism.
Apart from Diana herself, being caught up in a bloody battle and seeing
half of their companions slaughtered must have been something completely
outside their experience, indeed probably beyond their worst imaginings.
But to argue with the amazon, who was clearly set in her views, would be a
waste of time. And time might be something that they could not afford to
waste, for she was right that they ought to move.
"Listen to me!" he called to the party. "Imelda's screaming is likely to have alerted predators to our presence here. I know that most of you have had little sleep, but I'm sorry, we are going to have to move on." With an air of weary resignation and not a murmur of protest, the women scrambled to their feet. But there was one exception. "I'm sorry," Imelda said, "but I can't go on. You will have to leave me behind." Fred looked at her with a mixture of compassion and consternation. What could he do? They would make slow enough progress as it was, especially as it would not be light for another couple of hours, so that for two of them to carry her was out of the question.
