Astra decided that there was little point in waiting for the crows to
leave since, even if they did, once the scarecrow saw her emerge he might
well decide to call them back again. It occurred to her that if she wanted
to team up with Fred again it might have been better to have gone back
into the original tunnel, as then she might have been able to retrace her
steps. But it was too late to worry about that now. Perhaps this tunnel
would eventually intersect with the other one, and she would find herself
back in an area that she recognised. So, having convinced herself that it
was the best course of action open to her, she went deeper into the tunnel.
And "deeper" was the right word, as the tunnel slanted sharply downwards. Eventually:
