Was this portal the reason he'd run across that horde of screaming children, not to mention
ended up in a forest without leaving the caves? It did not matter. He had come to slay the
dragon, and slay it he would. He would let nothing deny him. And even if it would be no longer
a threat to his world he would not let it harm another.
Fred tensed and leaped into the portal. For a few seconds he floated in the midst of the swirl of colors and heard a torrent of noises--music, roaring, screaming, and other things he could not describe. He thought he saw the dragon flying through the sky just out of his reach. He tried to reach out and grab it. Something like a great wind struck him and sent him tumbling through the air, as the colors began to resolve into swiftly changing shapes, which gradually took forms he could understand--cities, forests, oceans, battlefields--and others he could not--a gleaming metal thing flying through the stars, men fighting in the sky. He realized too late that he did not know if there would be a way back and he might never see home again. Before long the images settled down, though Fred still felt as if the world was spinning around him. He was
