Fred realized that what had been dealt him by the Dragon's Master and his
naive request of the Doctor had landed him into the foulest of
circumstances. To seek an honorbound quest of securing shelter and a
source of income to eventually sail back to the Continent and to Allaria
was not practical. Hiring oneself out as a mercenary was much more
logical, if distasteful. Fred let go of his societal distaste and entered
the world of shady men, shadier women, and dark barrooms filled with
pipeweed.
He had already discovered where he was: the Nom Malbra, on a land separate from his own, ruled by the Hespan. The Hespan here called the sea to the east the Galactic Ocean, it was a name he had never heard, but he had heard tales of the Nom Malbra and was sure that his home must be to the north. After a few weeks Fred had joined a band of freebooters, men willing to fight, steal, maim, and extort. Fred - who had let go of his Allarian name and took the name Red - kept himself in check to a great degree, but he was finding that taking candy from babies was getting easier (as well as extorting the neighborhood mayor, lighting fire to the nearby hospice, and drowning the ducks of a man who owed silver to the wrong sort of guy). "Hey, Red!" screeched Vath. "Gimme a beer while your at the bar!" Of course Fred wasn't at the bar, he was at the chess table. But, being the low man on the totem pole as the Hespan/Nombra crossbreeds liked to say, he left his bet and went for a pitcher to give Vath and the boys. Upon returning to his bet he saw that Othlos had moved three pieces instead of one and it looked like one of his own pawns had been moved as well. This was a flagrant disregard for the rules, but "Red" was the low man on the totem pole and didn't want his throat cut in the middle of the night.
