"This makes no sense," Fred protested. "Why would anyone go to the trouble
of building this iron staircase, if it didn't lead anywhere? Could there
be a hidden door cut into the rock?"
Astra, who was on the step above the other two and so had the best view, carefully examined the rock above her in the wavering light from the torches. At first she could make out nothing of interest, but then her eyes adjusted to the poor light and she said: "Yes! There's a hairline crack that forms a square about two feet to a side. Come up beside me on the top step, Fred. Perhaps if we both put our backs into it, we can lift the slab." So Fred and Astra tried to shift the stone, whilst Velus admired the way that the muscles rippled in Astra's back and thighs.
