"The Jones woman must live next door," said the first voice. "Let's hope
she's in, since it would be too risky to come back here again after this
body has
been discovered. It's lucky for us that the super didn't take better care
of his spare
set of keys. We can't rely on Jones opening her door to us. Come on."
Their voices
faded as they moved away from the window.
Next door? That would be her own apartment, Stacy realised with a start. Her locked door would not be any problem for them. And before she could reach the door to escape, they would probably already be inside. Thinking quickly, she exited her window onto the fire escape, pulling over the green drape behind her. Then she entered through the window of the neighbouring apartment, and crouched down to ensure that she could not be seen from her own window should the men look out. On the floor, only a few feet away from her lay the body of a young woman with a large bullet hole in her chest. She was obviously dead. There was a lot of blood, some of which had splashed over the TV. Stacy tried to keep herself from vomiting, as she couldn't afford to make any noise. Then she heard the deep voice again: "...bag's here, but there's no sign of her. She's probably not far away, but it's too risky to wait. Since it was you who screwed up, you can be the one to tell the Prof that we've failed. He won't be pleased. She knows far too much." The voices faded away as the men left, leaving Stacy alone with the dead woman.
