The Never Ending Quest - Episode 62756

Okay, confused? Well, here's the straight scoop...

Now, I'm sure you got most of it but perhaps not all. Up to this point Rei II (the elder Rei) has been playing is slow and easy on her younger sister for a reason. Even up until now (and to a certain extent still is), Rei the younger is still very naive when it comes to emotions. If this was anyone else, the younger Rei could so very much be mislead (and taken advantage of, you see).

You see, one must remember that Rei III's life up to this point has been had been piloting EVA Unit 00 and whatever Commander Gendo Akari said Rei's purpose was (i.e. she was to obey him). Almost everything else had either been marginalized or ignored, resulting in a VERY narrowly focused girl here, boys and girls. The process of being resurrected only aggravated the problem, erasing any small gains she'd made in prior bodies, even. Nice way to keep her in check until the Commander had no more use for her, be sure of that. Rei III knows a LOT about her EVA and things which would help improve her performance with EVA, but social skills were . . . lacking. Hell, that played a large part why she (at least up to this point in time) had a rather doll like personality as seen in the anime.

That changes brought about with the return of memories from previous "incarnations" have done wonders for her personality, but she still had a way to go. Oh, she'd now been responding more readily to human contact. Understood more about human interactions. Understood herself more, the emotions she'd always had but hadn't really known enough to put titles on (and all that). Not really normal, let us just say, somewhere on par what one would find in the manga, for those familiar with the Evangelion manga. For those not, let us just say that instead of a doll like personality, one would find Rei III here rather . . . cold and stiff.

Rei II had become much more . . . . responsive and "normal" at this same time in her life due to several factors, including the fact that she'd "inherited" all the memories of "her" Yui Akari (including learned responses in social settings and such). While she wasn't a clone (mentally) of the woman, she had garnered knowledge from those memories, if you can follow me. Rei II had a bigger social knowlege base to draw upon than her younger sister here....

That said...

Oh, don't get me wrong about Rei III. She'd come a LONG way from what she had been. Regained and actually grown a bit, but it'd been rather too early to say that "Hey, look at Rei here . . . my how she's grown to be so . . . human." Saying that there was a LOT of things to deal with here, folks.

Still, the first step had been made and that was good. And her older sister, Rei II had originally planed (more or less) to at least make sure she was on the right path. That Rei III was starting off on the right foot. Maybe--since of all the likely candidates that particular person was the best--leave her in the care of "her" Major Katsuragi to raise and care for her.

As it turns out, it maybe that Rei III might NOT be staying behind after this is all said and done. Depends on what she decides next here about becoming a Champion or not, you know.

As for what had been planned (be it now somewhat in the air), Rei III . . .

Definitely Rei II wanted to speak with Rei III about what kind of relationship might be good to follow for Shinji and her (Rei III). There was the rather . . . touchy and embarrassing what could be in the offing here. It has been said or implied before, but in the DNA makeup that made up both Rei II and Rei III had come from their reality's YUI Akari: Shinji Arkai's mother. Depending on how MUCH DNA came from Yui could mean that, biologically, Rei III was "her" Shinji's half sister (a situation one does NOT want to have if one is to have a lover relationship. . . .with the consequences of "inbreeding" and all that if one goes . . . too far). Or perhaps the mix (as it turns out) was minimal (i.e. distant cousins), then Shinji and she could get away with it. In the end, it would still be Rei III's choice, but a little "input" from big sister was a thing to be done.

AS it turned out, the Yui DNA portion of Rei III's was somewhat lower than her sisters. Meaning that besides her being a vegetarian was more due to necessity than preference (due to her Lilith DNA she had been deathly allergic to meat and meat products), it also meant that as for as genetics go a Shinji/Rei pairing wasn't going to be harmful.

Thing is, with the chance that rather ill advised "data dump" that Rei II had given, it HAD helped decide things for her younger sister. She saw herself through her sister's eyes (weird stuff, this sharing of minds and all that) and saw how her older sister looked at things, and would look at the feelings of love that she herself had only begun to wrestle with towards Shinji. Saw and saw what that feeling of love actually was . . . a very similar "brand" of love as she has between herself and her older sister. She found herself . . . comfortable with that idea. Fine, she would be a close friend to her Shinji Akari . . . as close as brother and sister, truth be told. She felt it was the . . . best course of action.

. . .

Hey, look. While perhaps Shinji here might not be totally sure about whether or not he wanted that kind of relationship (boy was still working up courage to follow ANY kind of relationship beyond friendship with ANY of the women in his life), should NOT our Rei III here have SOME say in what kind of relationship she wants?! Yeah? Right? I am glad you understand.

But there was one thing that needed to be done in Rei III's to help Shinji (and help him immediately if not sooner) was to get him away from the situation he was in right now! While perhaps Rei II's Major Katsuragi may be a (barely) suitable guardian for "her" Shinji Akari, Rei III had grave doubts about "her" version of the woman. True, both drank a bit excessively (and GOD help you if you ever ate either of their cooking), but there were other . . . things that Rei III was now picking up on that . . . made her have doubts.

. . .

Was the Major going to actually try something . . . sexual with Shinji here, sooner or later? Oh for a while it appeared that such a thing wasn't to be, considering the re-animated (and steamy) relationship between her (Katsuragi) and her old flame, Kaji. But that old flame had gone . . . missing for some time now. Whispers that it had something to do with that brief disappearance of the vice-Commander of NERV.

Some of the darkest musings Rei III has from scant clues she'd picked up on from listening in on some of Gendo Akari's briefings was . . . that Major Misato Katsuragi had BEEN responsible for Kaji's death (for a perceived betrayal of her trust).

(Note: this anime has been callled contraversial for a LOT of reasons, folks. Nothing ever was certain with a lot of things, these tibits here included, but still . . . Neon Genesis Evangelion is NOT for little children).

Not exactly someone she wanted her friend to be hanging with, shall we say.

That and what kind of idiot would put Shinji and that . . . that b*tch, Asuka Langley Soryu (http:// en.wiki pedia. org/wiki /Asuka _Langley _Soryu) in the same household? Indeed? Shinji and Asuka . . . a bad combination indeed, I really fear.

Maybe long absent parents would help matters a bit? No, not speaking of Gendo Akari here. We’re talking of Yui! As far as Rei III knew, the soul of Yui Akari is still stuck inside Unit 01 (the Eva unit that Shinji drives). That thing went inert (i.e. is DEAD), but the woman’s soul got shunted into the soulless Rei clone body which made up the Dummy plug core so when the wish is asked for Yui Akari to be returned to human (as well as the other soul which makes up Unit 02, Asuke’s mother, as an afterthought) . . . the Rule does NOT bat an eye.

Technicians who'd finally been getting around to looking after the remaining EVA units (the Dummy Plugs in particular), there are a LOT of unwelcome surprises (especially for a brilliant, ersatz blonde female head scientist of NERV HQ).

Instead of waking up in the young blue haired, red eyed copy of Rei Dr. Akaji (the latest in what could only be termed a stand in lover/useful tool to the still missing Commander Akari) she finds . . .

  1. Yui Akari, unconscious and back in the flesh as she had been right before being sucked INTO the now defunct Unit 01.
