The three companions traveled for what seemed like hours through twisting,
mazelike passages. If it hadn't been for Velus and his keen canine nose,
they could've wandered for hours in a circle. At any rate, they eventually
began to hear a thumping noise. Fred wondered if Velus had somehow managed
to take a wrong path and lead them back to the drum chamber, but soon they
entered the room the sound was coming from and found out it was much worse
than that. The walls of the chamber were deep red, and many passages opened in strange directions from the room. The cave was lit by a vague glow that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere, and the very air seethed in time to the sound of thumping. Fred covered his ears. ...thump thump...thump thump...thump thump... Astra's eyes suddenly opened wide as an idea occurred to her. "It sounds like..." ...thump thump...thump thump...thump thump... Velus whined. At that same instant, a thought that had been flittering around in Fred's brain ever since the noise started finally became clear. His eyes bugged out of his head as he and Astra finished the sentence in unison. "...a heartbeat." Velus sniffed one of the walls and whined again. "What's wrong?" Fred asked and went over to see what the dog teen had discovered. He absently rested one hand on the nearest cavern wall as he scratched Velus's ear. The wall was moving. Fred jumped back immediately and looked carefully at the nearest wall. Sure enough, it was moving in time to the thumping noise. "Uh Astra...." he began. But Astra was nowhere to be seen. He looked frantically around for her, then realized Velus could just track her by her scent and told the dogboy to do so. Before Velus could move, Astra came running out from behind a pillar, looking as panicked as he had ever seen her. She stopped beside him, chest heaving in a way he would've appreciated more in other circumstances. "We've gotta get out of here! There's an underground river coming right for us!" As they ran towards one of the passages, Fred looked back to see a blood-red river raging through the cavern towards them. "Uh Astra...that's not water. That's blood."
