"What's a Movie?"

Her bemused expression tells you that your explanation has been less than helpful. "Look, do you know what a play is?" you ask.

Astra nods. "Well a movie is similar in concept. But instead of taking place in a theatre, the action can take place anywhere, with devices called cameras producing a record of the actors' performances against realistic backdrops. That record can then be played back on a large screen in front of an audience in a place known as a movie theatre or, in civilised countries, a cinema. Not only is there far greater realism than can be achieved in a theatre, but the film can be shown many times and, since many copies can be produced, in many different locations. Clear now?"

Astra looks a bit dubious but, perhaps not wanting to receive an even more long-winded explanation, she nods once more. "So this Sandy Carlisle is an actress in these movies?"

"That's right."

"Does she specialise in any particular sort of role?"

1. "Not really."
2. "She mostly seems to appear in comedies."
3. Before you can stop yourself, you have blurted out: "She mostly appears in blue movies." Oops. If Astra wants to know what a blue movie is, things could get tricky.
