Astra turned to Fred. "This is my younger sister, Alexandra - 'Alex' for short," she said. "Alex, this is Lord Fred from Allaria, who like me is on a mission to slay the dragon. He rescued me after the dragon had caught me and chained me up. And the dog is actually a teenage boy called Velus, who has been transformed by the dragon's magic." Velus barked a greeting. Once the introductions had been made, Alex got pints of ale for Fred and Astra, and a half-pint for herself (since Astra said she was too young to drink pints), water was fetched for Velus, and they sat down round a table.

Fred could see the family resemblance between the sisters. Alex looked like a younger, less voluptuous version of Astra, with the same red hair. She was dressed in man's attire.

"Now we are settled," said Astra, "you had better tell us your story. Apparently only those on a quest can stumble on this place. And since you are far too young to go off on a quest, you must have gone without our parents' consent."

1. "Sorry," said Alex, "but I can't tell you what my quest is. I've been sworn to secrecy."
2. "My quest was to find you, of course. I was worried about you. After all, you could easily have got yourself killed."
