No good deed goes unpunished . . .

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 61528

Indeed, this is a scene almost straight out of that anime series: Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's from the television version of that series (as opposed to the magazine--manga--version of it).

Of course, with this involving such things as "alternate realities" and such, one cannot usually have a complete match with what one finds from one reality to the next. There are exceptions and usually that has to do with the Champions being handed Quests by their Celestrial employers where their (the Champions') knowledge from popular TV shows and such comes in REALLY handy (as the Celestrials know it would).

Things are close enough still to the series to be . . . useful for the Champions. "Close enough for government work", as the old cliche goes is what applies here.

What the fallout of their actions shall do will make things easier for some other arrivals here in a moment.

Well, to say that this SHOULD make things more . . .difficult for the heroes here would be a fair thing to say. Roadblocks and roving patrols ARE the order for today in this immediate area soon enough, but not quiet yet and that's good for the Doctor's group.

Later on there could have been curfews and tight rationing, making feeding and care of cubs on the sly slightly difficult without proper credentials.... But right now that's another group we need not worry about (directly).

Thank goodness for backup generators for these kind of emergencies (in case of power failures in the broader national grid). However, as Elrondir will state later there had been something decidely off about this business IF things were anything like the anime.

When the glowing . . . Angel thing reared up from it's attempts trying to bore it's way into the giant robot, Unit Zero, it was not towards the direction of another Evangelion unit (piloted by a young boy named Shingi) when it's shields went active. No. More on that here in a minute.

Soon enough here things are still too much in flux and the whole of the situation too new for those in power at Tokyo 3 to know what exactly befell them. Yes, the lights flickered and the backup city generators (the city is well prepared for invaders from space so the backups . . . just in case).

Granted, the disruption in power was more than enough to cause the very NEEDED launch of Shingi's Evangelion unit (would have been WAY too late to make any kind of difference). We finally do see (after much cursing on the inside of NERV's command complex by one Operations commander) the backup units kick in . . . but there is another problem that crops up.

The unit Shingi pops up onto the surface with (in fact ALL Evangelion units) have . . .gone inert. Basically, it is like whatever motive force that moves them . . . is gone.

That is going to be . . .shall we say something of a problem, the largest weapon and the only effective weapon against any remaining Angels who may have been swept up with Tokyo 3.

. . .

See, the entire place got magically displaced by a malicious magical item called the Necromonicom. The fact that such things should exist (and powerful magical items should exist) might cause concern for hte population. However, the city managers are more concerned with more . . mundane things. It is dawning on those here that . . .something is decidely off.

Like the city has been, cut off from the outside world? Well, the city is well stocked for supplies and it's population is . . . orderly and used to being under various degrees of what some would term "martial law" and emergency conditions. Point in fact, all but a few of it's citizens are still in the attack shelters.

What is being said here is that life goes on as well as it can (as normal as it can) in this strange, constantly space invader attacked metropolis. How long that shall last will be seen later, but right lets concentrate on the Doctor's group, shall we? The here and now . . .

. . .

It gets all caught on tape by a young man who decided to defy the rules and catch this latest fight on tape between the Angels and Evangelions. That tape will slip through the censors of NERV and what is on it . . .

Details on the shaky video are grainy, but what happens is clear enough. The Evangelion unit (that giant robot thingy) was losing and losing BADLY to the latest space invader, which was some kind of glowing ribbon that floated through the air and was doing a boaring attack to the outmatched unit. Indeed, not only did the big gunshots from the robot's weapon not do anything to the glowing worm/thing/space invader . . . .they just made a very nice "twang" sound when they contacted the . . .on video.

Honestly, the noise had been more than a bit of Hell on the eardrums of the Doctor's group . . .

What the Star Trek types out there would call it's shields (known as an "Absolute Terror Field" in this anime reality). . . it was too much for Unit Zero's gun. . . and almost too much for the Champions audio sensory organs...

However all that said, for whatever reason there was what some in the media (much to the chargrin of some of the more materialistic and level headed out there) some . . . mage types took offense (a bunch of people, some male, some female and whatever) and started throwing . . . .lightning bolts at the glowing worm....

Actually, it wasn't offense that set off the attack. More like a female magic user (Inquirer to be exact) also recognized the setting and shouted out the danger (more or less, she'd not been AS versed in this story as Elrondir): if that worm thing penetrated that robot and started to compromise (psychically) the pilot, the pilot would throw the robot's self destruct . . . and the whole thing would go off like a tac nuke (with them at ground zero).

. . .

Actually, in the anime it had been the threat of the Angel attacking Shingi's unit which had goaded Unit Zero's pilot into self destructing (so that Shingi would not be killed or . . . assimilated). Slight mistake on Inquirer's part, but in the end . . .conclusions can only be as good as the source material that went INTO making those conclusions. Sad to say, even in Inquirer's day and age mistakes are made (and perpetuated)...

Anyway . . .

At first, the group had not really INTENDED on attacking (and destroying) the Angel. Maybe some kind of . . .negotiated truce or some such could be reached (and bloodshed avoided). Perhaps a vain hope on the Champions' part, but then again this group isn't the "Kill them all and let God sort them out" types. A GOOD thing, honestly, considering the power that some pack on their person alone, with phasors . . .

Sigin is the one who attempts it. He has the best mental shields of the lot, so would be least prone to psionic attack or take over. However, a quick telepathic glimpse into the intentions of the worm confirmed the danger and thus magic attacks (which the AT field never was designed to counter)...The intrusion of first an Angel into her mind (and then the inclusion . . .by whatever means . . .of Sigin into the mix really does a number on her here) . . .

That said, AGAIN that's for a bit later. We must stay with the Doctor's group, okay?

The Champions "beat feet" and got out of the area before the authorites could question them. Then, while hiding as best they can from patrols in the woods (not exactly an easy feat when you have somebody like the size of a centaur with the Champions to handle, this hiding business). . . .they

It did just, however, set the scene for when the demifoxes showed up, building tension which hit a HIGH note when all outside contact with the modern world was lost (i.e. they got teleported to a world much like what Rei and friends hale from). That fact will (like so many other disseperate one) come into play soon enough . . . .like this little factoid!

. . .

Remember where in another storyline (maybe) you might have read about some girl named Belboz seathing at her treachorous apprentice for playing with a magical artifact called the Necromonicom (re: 13741)? Well, here is a news flash: it happened! The artifact is out of control and has taken over Elaine (causing all kind of chaos and death). The Amazons are in something of a panicked route, but it could have been MUCH worse.

Yeah, the group could have teleported right into the CENTER of the Amazonian army and boy wouldn't THAT be a bloody affair?

Oh, in case you haven't figured it out, this IS Fifi's and Bambi's homeworld . . . just part of the real estate has been . . . .renovated, shall we say? Of course, the Champions do not know this yet. . . and so are making a mistaken interpretation of facts presented (as seen).

. . .

"Shit, looks like we were wrong after all?" Inquirer sighs, looking around this mess from the area they'd retreated to from the scene of the attack. "Sorry girls . . .I'm so sorry."

"Well, we'll make you as home as we can back on Terra Prime," Fertal says, trying to console the distraught Fifi.

"There was the smell of necromancy on that metal giant," Bambi says softly, looking . . .worried.

"That young girl has . . . issues," Sigin whispers to Chiana, pointing up at the prone robot fighter (and at the spot where SOMETHING is opening up . . . as if some kind of escape pod was going to . . . launch)?

"FOOOM!!" goes the Entry plug, shooting the now unconscious Rei to safety (they hope). Tricorder readings showed that while some kind of . . . bio-contamination had happened the condition was not life- threatening . . . yet.

Hopefully that pod has a homing beacon for rescue parties to track it down. Whatever the case, though, it is time to go!! At least we managed to stop something from going south here! Inquirer sighs, only to frown as the Key makes a buzzing sound.
