The book that Astra held was entitled: "My First Story Book". She opened it. Sure enough, it was intended as a child's first reading primer. "Do you mean to say that you've got all these books and you can't read any of them?" an astonished Astra asked.

The Beast hung his head. "I'm afraid so. You can read, can't you? Would you teach me?"

"That could take rather a long time," Astra said. "Months, perhaps even years. There are other things that really I ought to be doing."

  1. The Beast insists, though he is willing to let Fred and Velus go.
  2. The Beast looks so downcast that Astra agrees to stay and teach him to read.
  3. The Beast lets them all go.
  4. Luckily, Fred spots a book entitled: "Learn to Read the Magic Way" that, being unable to read, the Beast didn't know that he had. Apparently the spells it contains enable one to learn to read instantly.
