Fred's stream of consciousness, meandering as it has been in the
foothills of childhood recollection, now gathers pace and becomes a
broadening expanse of white water, and now a raging torrent, as he is
carried inexorably to later memories. Names, faces, places all pass
by as if on a distant riverbank viewed from a raft which was travelling
too fast to control. But then (to continue the metaphor) Fred finds himself suddenly halted by the rocky outcrop of a particular recollection, and is confronted by a clear, stark memory of his abduction, in young adulthood, by pirates.
